XLRI Jamshedpur

A modest rented room in the Boulevard Hotel, Bistupur is where XLRI originally started in 1949. Fr. Quinn Enright had prophetically anticipated the Society’s current day thrust when he spelled out the vision of this first of its kind Institute thus: ‘to impart necessary knowledge and skills in human relations to supervisors of the Steel City, and to implant sound doctrine and principles of labor and trade union organization among workers’. With a core committee including the GM of TISCO, a Union Leader Labor Commissioner, Fr. Quinn had fleshed out a curriculum including Labor Laws, Wages, Collective Bargaining, Trade Unionism, Parliamentary Procedures and Public Speaking.

After a full day’s work, executives and workers from the local industries rushed to KMPM School to attended class from 6 pm to 9 pm.  Fr Enright’s class on October 11, 1951 comprised 70 students. It was a momentous event and overwhelmed by gratitude and a sense of accomplishment Fr Nugent’s commented: “To my mind the inauguration of this Institute after no more than two years in the mission field is an outstanding feat to the credit of Jamshedpur Mission. More than that, the advanced level on which it is carried out is still more ‘extraordinary’”.

The nascent institute in 1956 moved to its own room in the new building of Loyola School and offered a two-year day program leading to a PGDIMR recognized both by the State and the Central governments. In 1959, Fr. E.H. McGrath with help from Fr. R.W. Norman worked to give XLRI a building and a campus of its own. In 1962 XLRI formally moved into the present premises with Fr. Bill Tome as its Director.

Today, like the tiny mustard seed of the gospel, XLRI has spawned into a glorious, sprawling campus with a modern, world class campus. Research, Diploma and Certificate classes through Virtual Interactive Classes, Week-end face to face classes, Consultancies, MDPS have been added. Including those in the Delhi-NCR satellite campus from 2020, XLRI reaches out to over 2000 students, turning out value based, responsible, global leaders and is consistently ranked among the top three B-Schools of the nation.

XIM University

This is the only Jesuit Institution of higher education in Orissa. Fr General granted permission in May 1986 to establish the management school “with a difference”. The first batch of 60 students began their class in October 1987. The “extension service” known as CENDERET (Centre for Development, Research and Training) began in 1988. It took up developmental projects and research work in the State. Its work is recognized all over the State. In a quarter of a century, the Institute in Bhubaneswar has carved out a niche for itself by reserving 60 per cent of seats for the domiciles of Orissa while the remaining lot is filled out by an all India  Admission Test. It has been among the top 10 Business Schools of the country.

In 2013, the Government of Odisha gave permission to start Xavier University as a state, private university. On 11th May 2021, the Xavier University, Odisha (Amendment) Act 2021 was passed in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, renaming Xavier University as XIM University.

In 1976, the Loyola College of Education or B.Ed. College as it is popularly known, launched its first class of 50 students with a dubious, verbal “assurance” of affiliation for one year. It would be nice to record that this was the culmination of four years – since ’72 – of dreaming, striving, urging and that it had borne fruit. It now occupies 5 acres of land in the township of Tata Motors with its own infra structure. Recently a 55- room Women’s Hostel – Arrupe Bhavan – was inaugurated that caters to a dire need of the women seeking admission.
